Plus, once you know that the camera and mic are being used, you can easily revoke access to the app if you don’t trust it. This feature lets you know when the app actively uses the camera and mic, so your privacy isn’t compromised. Some third-party apps use the camera and the microphone as soon as you open them. These access indicators are beneficial, mainly since they help you identify rogue apps. But when you turn off the camera during the call, you’ll notice that the green dot will change to yellow, which means at that instance, the app is only using the microphone. However, if you use an app that needs both the camera and the microphone, like for a FaceTime video call, you’ll see a green dot near the status icons like the battery and signal strength. The green dot will appear even if you’re using an app that uses the device’s camera, like Snapchat. ![]() Meanwhile, a green dot means your device’s camera is being used. The yellow/orange dot will only appear when the app uses the microphone. This includes apps that use a mic to let you speak to others (like the Phone app) and apps that allow you to record your voice. If you see a yellow dot, that means an app you’re using has access to the microphone. There are two kinds of indicators – orange/yellow and green. These indicators help ensure user privacy. One such feature is the access indicators that inform users when their phone’s microphone or camera is being used. Perhaps this was because of its rarity, he thought. He began to dig around in the literature and realized that no one had thoroughly documented such medieval graffiti. “I was a bit nonplussed to begin with,” he says. It was when he closely inspected the paintings that he first observed marks scratched into the paint: previously unnoticed graffiti. In 2008, Champion was asked to manage a conservation program of medieval wall paintings at Lakenheath church in Suffolk. “In the past, fonts were usually situated on the north side of churches, close to the ‘Devil’s door’, and we find concentrations of these designs on and around the area where the font would have been,” he explains. He moves quickly to the north side of the church and, this time, sweeps the beam of his flashlight down a column, where the raking light reveals repeats of this same precise geometric design. As the panel is bathed in raking light, patterns come into view: a series of perfect circles, filled with six-petaled flower patterns, scratched into the stone. To twenty-first century eyes, the scratched designs seem incongruous with the magnificent setting, but Champion sees more than ancient graffiti. “The blue color was made from lapis lazuli pigment,” Champion says, “which was very exotic and expensive then.”Īpproaching what appears to be a bare patch of stone on one of the font’s panels, Champion illuminates it with his flashlight-at first from the front, and then from the side. Tiny fragments of paint in the crevices confirm that the font was brightly decorated in medieval times. Its elaborately carved stone panels depict religious scenes, including a baptism and the ordination of a priest. That period of prominence explains why the seemingly insignificant village sports a glorious church of cathedralesque proportions.Īs the large wooden door shuts behind him, Matthew Champion, project director of the Norfolk and Suffolk Medieval Graffiti Surveys, proceeds to the ornate octagonal font that dominates one end of the nave of St. But 700 years ago, Cley-Next-the-Sea was at the heart of one of the busiest ports in England, the Glaven Port, where grain, malt, fish, spices, coal, cloth, barley, and oats were exported and imported. Its harbor silted up in the seventeenth century, so the village is now separated from the sea by spectacular salt marshes that draw many bird-watchers. ![]() ![]() Situated far from England’s highways, it draws visitors-but only committed ones-year-round. The finds are changing the perception of how medieval worshippers viewed religion and interacted with their churches.Ĭley-Next-the-Sea, on the north coast of Norfolk in eastern England, is a well-heeled tourist village of ancient flint-walled houses and narrow streets. Furthermore, the practice appears to have been condoned, and sometimes even encouraged, by Church authorities. Today that would be sacrilege, but a new survey of the walls of medieval churches in England is revealing that many of them are covered in riots of graffiti, scratched into what were once boldly colored walls. Imagine walking into your local church, pulling a penknife from your pocket, and scratching a little drawing into the wall: a geometric design, a drawing of a boat, even a few meaningful words. ![]() ![]() ![]() And today, as so long ago for Sandy, she has not lost her spirit of rebellion and empowerment. The Grease finale outfit is reminiscent of many garments seen on the runway in recent years such as Mugler's daring catsuits or the femme fatale ones presented by Saint Laurent a few seasons ago. It is also thanks to that very tight spandex top-pants combo worn by Bad Sandy to the tune of You Are The One (That I Want)that the film starring John Travolta is still a beloved hit, now so much a part of the collective imagination that it has inspired designers from Moschino to Jean Paul Gaultier many times over. The 3D printed crossbow is able to shoot about 20 feet, according to Thone, who says that depends on the hair clips used. Using a 2/56″ x 1/2″ screw to hold the trigger in place, Thone used metal hair clips for the bow and Q-tips for the arrows. Thone points out that he printed the crossbow upside down with the handle pointing down, with minimal supports. This mini-crossbow came with some of his own modifications, by including not only a real, working trigger, but also a little delicate engineering. ![]() This 3D printed mini-crossbow was constructed by Steve Thone, who is definitely an individual not afraid to try a DIY project, large or ‘mini.’ As with the construction of remote operated vehicles, which is his specialty, when Thone sees something he thinks might be fun to try, he likes to try and make it himself. I’m sure the ever-practical Katniss would respect the hair clip, I mean, um, bow - not to mention the extra Q-tips which always come in handy when you are trying to survive in the wild. Sparkle ones, though they are sometimes slightly larger or come with a stencil or dies. TheRecollections stamps cost much more than the Ms. The letters on this “Happy Halloween” were supposed to be outlines, and the “Let’s Celebrate” is barely legible. Pressing firmly or unevenly at all creates a blob, and many of the images in the calendar set are so tiny that the details filled in with ink. I have found that to get the best image, you need to be very gentle and just kiss the paper with it. The “thinking of you” sentiment came out pretty nice each time, but the rest were very sensitive. ![]() I did not stamp every design from these two sets, but did try to get a good variety. Obviously packaging is not nearly as important as how they stamp, but that is a bit of a disappointment as well. I had no idea until I stamped it that the words had a sketchy effect on the edges, because I couldn’t see it clearly on the package.Īnd the stamps in this holiday set are so tiny and detailed, even when I hold a white piece of paper behind it I find them difficult to see. Perhaps this is just me, but I have a very hard time seeing what the designs are because they have taken to this habit of printing all their packages in a rainbow. However, right out of the gate I have a problem with the look of these stamps. There are tons of different stamp sets, and they are cute! I especially like their latest collection in the planner aisle. The Michaels brand is called Recollections. Oh Michael’s, I really wanted to like your stamps, but they just are not what I expected. I have already gone back to purchase more since trying these out. You can’t beat the price and there are a lot of cute designs. The packaging and branding are clean and simple, which I really appreciate. Overall, I think these are a good purchase. I plan to keep trying them with different inks later on. This was a fairly simple trial just to get an initial impression. I have noticed that acrylic stamps sometimes need a little breaking in before getting good ink coverage. ![]() This could just be because the stamps are new. I got crisp result with the embossing powder, but I felt that the dye ink came out a little spotty. How could I resist this font!? I am a sucker for a good looking alphabet. I spelled out a few phrases and tried stamping with black dye ink as well as using a couple different embossing powders. I tend to go overboard when it comes to stamps, especially these acrylic kind which are absolutely everywhere! I have certainly come across a lot of duds, so, as I reminded myself of this I decided to just buy my favorite one and try it out first. ![]() I immediately went for the stamps of course, and as my hands were filling up with one of each design, I paused. Stickers, clothespins, tags, envelopes, notecards, paper pads in all different sizes, ink, stamps, twine, washi tape, and even adhesives! They have everything in these bins. I was most interested in these bins where all of the products were $1.99, though I did see other products of the same branding throughout the paper crafting section at slightly higher price points.
